For the first time in the German history I can remember, investors were so desperate yesterday that they lent €3.900.000.000 to Germany, not only without asking for interest, but actually donating €250.000 so that Germany would accept their money. The interest yield was a negative 0.0122%.

Pretty insane. If someone wants to lend me some money, and I have to pay back less than I received, let me know.

(In comparison, Italy currently pays an interest rate of over 7% when lending money from investors/banks)

Today, I cooked. All kinds of things. Because I was hungry. For instance, Zucchini with salt, pepper, lemon and balsamico, in the oven. Fresh garlic bread. Fresh pasta.

And then, a person came into the room. And took two old slices of pizza out of the frigde. Three days old. He prepared them in the oven, next to my tasty, fresh, healthy and utterly vegetably Zucchini. Until the slices were burned. He didn’t care for them much, I think.

And then he sat down in front of me, and I looked at him, through the piles of delicious food on my side of the table. On two big plates.

He said: “Ah, I don’t like this. Any chance you want to eat this?”

He said this because he works in a pizza store. And he had eaten this very pizza – that is, the other 10 out of 12 slices – for three days.

I ended up eating the pizza. He ended up eating beans, because he wanted beans.

Surely I will eat my delicious food at some point.
Tomorrow, maybe.

Wulff hat gestern Abend ein Exklusivinterview für ARD und ZDF gegeben (was vom Deutschen Journalisten-Verband, der RTL-Mediengruppe, der ProSiebenSat.1-Gruppe und dem Nachrichtensender N24 scharf kritisiert wurde, aber das ist eine andere Geschichte).

Darin fallen so einige Zeilen, die sich hoffentlich in ein paar Jahren in Geschichtsbüchern finden lassen. Ich fasse erstmal Wulffs Fazit zusammen, dann zitiere ich die wichtigsten Zeilen des Interviews, dann kommt mein Fazit.

Wulff sagt, er habe einen “schweren Fehler” gemacht und habe Verhalten gezeigt, dass mit seinem “eigenen Amtsverständnis nicht vereinbar” ist. Ja, er hat halt führende Journalisten gedroht, aber das ist nicht weiterhin wichtig oder schlimm, weil er ja in der Weihnachtsansprache gesagt hat, dass Pressefreiheit wichtig ist. Außerdem hat er sich entschuldigt, damit sei ja wohl alles gut. Er sagt weiterhin, er habe durch “diese Art von Umgang mit den Dingen [...] dem Amt sicher nicht gedient”. Sein Fazit: die Bürgerinnen und Bürger “setzen darauf” dass er Bundespräsident bleibt, denn er hat in der Vergangenheit einfach ganz Wunderbares geleistet. Zum Beispiel öhm. Geht auch ohne Beispiel. Wunderbares halt.

Deppendorf: “Kommen wir jetzt mal zu den Kritikpunkten die Ihnen vorgeworfen werden, sie sind in den letzten Tagen besonders in Kritik geraten wegen der Anrufe beim Chefredakteur der Bild Zeitung Kai Diekmann und beim Vorstandsvorsitzenden des Springerkonzerns Herrn Döpfner. Ihnen wird Verletzung des Grundrechts der Pressefreiheit vorgeworfen, sie sollen auf dem Band, auf der Mailbox beide Herren bedroht haben. Sie sprechen von Kriegsführung, von einem endgültigen Bruch. Ist sowas nicht unwürdig für einen Bundespräsidenten der eine kritische Berichterstattung auf diese Art und Weise verhindern will?”

[Wulff widerspricht den Ausführungen von Deppendorf hier nicht, was zeigt, dass das, was Deppendorf zitiert, der Wahrheit entspricht]

Wulff: “Der Anruf bei dem Chefredakteur der Bild Zeitung war ein schwerer Fehler der mir Leid tut, für den ich mich entschuldige. Ich habe das auch sogleich nach Rückkehr aus dem Ausland persönlich getan, es ist auch akzeptiert worden. Ich habe in der Erklärung vor Weihnachten mich ausdrücklich zum Recht der Pressemeinungsfreiheit bekannt und halte das für mein eigenes Amtsverständnis nicht vereinbar, denn ich will natürlich besonnen, objektiv, neutral mit Distanz als Bundespräsident agieren, und ich möchte vor allem Respekt vor den Grundrechten, auch dem der Pressemeinungsfreiheit haben, und habe offenkundig mich in dem Moment eher als Opfer gesehen als denjenigen der Bringschuld hat gegenüber der Öffentlichkeit Transparenz herzustellen und auch berechtige Fragen zu beantworten.”

Deppendorf: “Haben sie zusammengefasst nochmal gefragt nicht durch ihr Verhalten in den letzten Wochen das Amt des Bundespräsidenten schwer beschädigt?”

Wulff: “Das Amt des Bundespräsidenten ist aus vielerlei Gründen in Deutschland schwieriger geworden, und durch diese Art von Umgang mit den Dingen hat man dem Amt sicher nicht gedient, aber ich bin fest davon überzeugt, dass ich durch eine ganze Reihe von Aktivitäten in der Amtszeit das Amt des Bundespräsidenten wieder gestärkt habe, dass es eine hohe Anerkennung genießt und ich bin geradezu überrascht wie stark die Bürgerinnen und Bürger es von mir selbst auch erklärt, erläutert bekommen wollen und letztlich darauf setzen dass ich Bundespräsident bleibe, denn ich nehme meine Verantwortung wahr, ich habe mich bewusst dafür entschieden und ich habe ein nachhaltiges Interesse an unserem Land, es voranzubringen, und wir brauchen auch jetzt die Kraft uns wieder um Politik zu kümmern, denn es kommen schwierige Aufgaben auf uns zu, und da braucht eben auch einen Bundespräsidenten der sich diesen Aufgaben zuwenden kann.”

Mein Fazit:
Wulff, als jemand der in seiner Vergangenheit andere Politiker zum Rücktritt aufgefordert hat, weil sie seiner Meinung nach moralisch falsch gehandelt hatte, hat nicht nur mehrfach nachweislich gelogen, um sein Verhalten zu vertuschen, was Anlass zu der Annahme gibt, dass er denkt, dass das Verhalten falsch war und ist, sonst hätte er kein Risiko eingehen müssen und im Landtag und auch danach zu lügen, um das ganze zu vertuschen; Wulff hat auch bei führenden Journalisten angerufen und ihnen gedroht, sollten sie die Wahrheit veröffentlichen.
Falls er sich im Amt halten kann, wäre das absolut vernichtend für das deutsche öffentliche Verständnis von Moral und Integrität. Wer sich jetzt hinter ihn stellt nimmt in Kauf, dass eine ganze Generation von jungen Menschen endgültig den Glauben an die Politik verliert.
Mir ist Wulff egal. Ich habe keine Ahnung, ob er ein guter Bundespräsident war oder nicht, er hat kaum etwas getan, was es in die Medien geschafft hat. Aber es darf nicht sein, dass ein Staatsoberhaupt nach Täuschen und Lügen und Bedrohungen im Amt bleibt. Egal von welcher Partei die Person ist.

Heute Mittag erklärte das Amt des Bundespräsidenten seinen Rücktritt von Christian Wulff sowie von sämtlichen verfassungsmäßigen Rechten und Pflichten. Das bisherige oberste Staatsamt ließ in einer Presseerklärung mitteilen, die nachhaltige Beeinträchtigung seines Ansehens durch den gegenwärtigen Amtsinhaber wiege zu schwer. Nur durch einen Verzicht des Amtes auf Christian Wulff und damit auf seine grundgesetzliche Position lasse sich weiterer Schaden von Deutschland abwenden. Nachtrag vom 05.01.2012:
Wulffs Anwälte haben, wie im Interview angekündigt, ein Dokument veröffentlicht, dass bezüglich Transparenz “neue Maßstäbe” hat (Zitat Wulff).

“Jens Borchers: Nein, eine wirkliche Neuigkeit, die über das hinausgeht, was schon seit Tagen bekannt ist, steht da nicht drin. Im Prinzip ist es eine Zusammenfassung dessen, was Wulff im Interview bei ARD und ZDF gesagt hat. Interessant ist eher, was nicht in der Erklärung steht. Gleich auf der ersten Seite heißt es, dass es keine Antworten ‘zu Fragen in Bezug auf Telefonkontakte mit dem Chefredakteur der Bild-Zeitung’ gibt. Kein einziges Wort.
Stattdessen verweisen seine Anwälte diesbezüglich ‘auf die öffentlichen Erklärungen des Bundespräsidenten’, sprich auf sein Interview vom Mittwoch.”

In August 2011, Dawkins posted a response in the Washington Post to a statement by presidential candidate Rick Perry about evolution. In it, he rants in typical Dawkins style about the republican party, creationism, intelligent design and the United States.

I think Dawkins gets more and more … readable, actually. I like his ideas, have always liked them, and agree with many of the things he says, although I feel he is not doing a very good political job by the way he states them. It is most certainly extremely condescending and arrogant.

However, this has reached a certain threshold of silliness for me that I can laugh about it. I find it amusing. He has become one of the old grumpy people, which does not invalidate his points.

“In any other party and in any other country, an individual may occasionally rise to the top in spite of being an uneducated ignoramus. In today’s Republican Party ‘in spite of’ is not the phrase we need. Ignorance and lack of education are positive qualifications, bordering on obligatory. Intellect, knowledge and linguistic mastery are mistrusted by Republican voters, who, when choosing a president, would apparently prefer someone like themselves over someone actually qualified for the job.

Any other organization — a big corporation, say, or a university, or a learned society – -when seeking a new leader, will go to immense trouble over the choice. The CVs of candidates and their portfolios of relevant experience are meticulously scrutinized, their publications are read by a learned committee, references are taken up and scrupulously discussed, the candidates are subjected to rigorous interviews and vetting procedures. Mistakes are still made, but not through lack of serious effort.

The population of the United States is more than 300 million and it includes some of the best and brightest that the human species has to offer, probably more so than any other country in the world. There is surely something wrong with a system for choosing a leader when, given a pool of such talent and a process that occupies more than a year and consumes billions of dollars, what rises to the top of the heap is George W Bush. Or when the likes of Rick Perry or Michele Bachmann or Sarah Palin can be mentioned as even remote possibilities.”

On December 5th, Forbes.com described the “National Defense Authorization Act” as the “Greatest Threat to Civil Liberties“:

“[The law] would place domestic terror investigations and interrogations into the hands of the military and would open the door for trial-free, indefinite detention of anyone, including American citizens, so long as the government calls them terrorists.”

Shortly thereafter, the NYTimes posted a great article called “Guantanamo forever“, in which a lot of very serious issues were raised.

Spencer Ackermann also wrote an extensive report on wired.com about the consequences if Obama signed the act:

“So despite the Sixth Amendment’s guarantee of a right to trial, the Senate bill would let the government lock up any citizen it swears is a terrorist, without the burden of proving its case to an independent judge, and for the lifespan of an amorphous war that conceivably will never end. And because the Senate is using the bill that authorizes funding for the military as its vehicle for this dramatic constitutional claim, it’s pretty likely to pass.”

Yesterday, Obama signed the bill.

“The fact that I support this bill as a whole does not mean I agree with everything in it,” Mr. Obama said in a statement issued in Hawaii, where he is on vacation. “I have signed this bill despite having serious reservations with certain provisions that regulate the detention, interrogation and prosecution of suspected terrorists.” [...] [He] said that he would never authorize the indefinite military detention of American citizens, because “doing so would break with our most important traditions and values as a nation.”

To sum up: Obama signed a bill which gives himself and any future president the power “to break with America’s most important traditions and values as a nation” (quote Obama).

Worth living today: The Iliac Crest

A small, little-known branch of the National Institutes of Health, NCCAM was launched a dozen years ago to study alternative treatments used by the public but not accepted by mainstream medicine. Since its birth, the center has spent $1.4 billion, most of it on research.

They spent the money to see whether coffee enemas heal pancreatic cancer, whether intercessory prayers help heal AIDS, and invested various forms of energy healing.
Surprisingly, they found that these things do in fact not work.

“Lots of good science and good scientists are going unfunded,” said Dr. David Gorski, a breast cancer researcher at Wayne State University, who has been a vocal critic of NCCAM. “How can we justify wasting money on something like this when there are so many other things that are much more plausible and much more likely to result in real benefit?”

I do think we have to give them credit for some of the things they are looking into though. E.g. they ran a study showing that Gingko Biloba does not protect against or have a therapeutic effect in dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

DeKosky headed a $36.5 million study, including $25 million from NCCAM, on ginkgo biloba, a popular supplement taken as a defense against dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. DeKosky’s study concluded that it did not lower the overall incidence rate of either condition in elderly people who were normal or already had mild cognitive impairment.

However, more and more money seems to be put into causes that are already shown to be ineffective, like acupuncture (Berman et al., 2008, New England Journal of Medicine).

“We have to be good stewards of public money for science,” said Gorski, the cancer researcher. “I don’t view NCCAM as being a good steward of our public money at the moment. Even if they are doing rigorous science, they are still looking at incredibly implausible things.”

A dear friend of mine sent me this five-minute Youtube video about two years ago in which Richard Feynman talks about doubt, uncertainty and religion. I like it a lot and have therefore quoted it many times since.

I was excited when I found a lecture yesterday Feynman gave as part of a lecture series in 2011. A transcript of the speech was posted on a blog, and after reading it on the airplane today and decided to repost it.

There are some typos in the original transcript, I corrected a couple, but it is a very long text, and I’m sure you’ll be able to read it, even with some mistakes in it.

Some things I don’t agree with, but there are many things we can learn a lot from. I will post the most important quotes first – if you’re in a hurry, at least read these – and then post the whole lecture below the excerpt.
