Ich habe vor ein paar Tagen Post vom Finanzamt bekommen – ich solle doch bitte nachweisen, dass ich aus der Kirche ausgetreten bin. Wenn ich das nicht kann, solle ich bitte Kirchensteuer nachzahlen.

Zur Erinnerung: wenn man aus der Kirche austritt geht man beispielsweise zum Rathaus, zahlt 25 Euro Verwaltungsgebuehr an den Staat, und schickt danach den Bescheid, den man erhaelt, zum Finanzamt.

Aber der Staat erinnert sich aktuell bei vielen Menschen auf einmal nicht mehr daran, dass er da 25 Euro kassiert hat.

Der Brief liegt zu Hause auf meinem Buerokratie Stapel, und gerade stosse ich zufaellig auf einen Artikel in der FAZ, der das Thema behandelt. Zusammenfassend: Staat und Kirche zocken Buerger ab (eine Ueberschrift des Artikels traegt sogar den Titel “Skrupelloses Geschäftsgebaren”).

Ein Zusammenfassung ist auf hyperblog.de zu finden:

• Man geht zum Amt (Familiengericht oä) bezahlt eine Gebühr und leistet dem Staat eine Unterschrift, dass man austritt
• Der Staat registriert das, verlangt eine Bearbeitungsgebühr
• Man schickt dem Finanzamt eine Kopie des Dokuments, die tragen das in die Steuerkarte ein
• Und nun sagt das Oberverwaltungsgericht, dass das nicht zählt?!
• Das Beste: nach 10 Jahren werden die Dokumente vernichtet und es soll kein verlässlicher Vermerk existieren? Da stellt sich mir die Frage: ist der Staat oder das Amt nicht vertrauenswürdig?
• Die Kirchen scheinen darauf zu spekulieren, dass der Bürger sich auf den Staat verlässt, was man hier eindeutig wohl nicht kann, und macht daraus ein lohnendes Geschäftsmodell mit der Schützenhilfe des Staates

Was tun, wenn man keine Kopie des Bescheides mehr hat, weil man das Original an das Finanzamt geschickt hat, und dachte, dass der Staat sicher wissen wird, dass man aus der Kirche ausgetreten ist:

Auch wenn auf der Lohnsteuerkarte der Betroffenen stets eingetragen war: “Kein Kirchensteuerabzug”, hilft ihnen das nicht – selbst wenn dies bis dahin von allen für sie zuständigen Finanzämtern so praktiziert worden ist. Dies schaffe keinen “Vertrauenstatbestand”, befand das Berliner Oberverwaltungsgericht (Az.: OVG 9 B 25.05). Notfalls bleibt nur ein Ausweg: schnell noch einmal aus der Kirche austreten – und Steuern nachzahlen.

Interessant dabei ist, dass man sich natuerlich noch sehr genau daran erinnert, an welchem Tag ich getauft wurde …

U.S. Representative John Shimkus recently publicly stated about himself:

“I am uniquely qualified among a group of talented contenders to lead the Energy and Commerce Committee.”

And indeed, it is about to be decided whether Shimkus, a Republican member of the House from Illinois, will become chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. He sits in the committee already, which is considered to be among the most powerful ones, “with a wide-ranging purview over legislation touching on energy policy, environmental initiatives and public health” (thestar.com).

What’s so special about Shimkus? What is his unique qualification?

He is convinced that global warming is an issue better be ignored, because “God already promised not to destroy the Earth [...] The Earth will end only when God declares it’s time to be over. Man will not destroy this Earth.”

After the Christian Democrats party leader Päivi Räsänen announced ten days ago on a TV show that homosexuality is a sin, and that sex is a thing that should only take place within a heterosexual marriage, 37.000 people left the Finnish Protestant Church.

That is more exits than in the last year.

And of course, the argumentation is as hilarious as it usually is:
“According to the bible, homosexual relations are against the will of God.”

Dear Mrs. Räsänen: do you have children? Because if you do, you might need to kill them.

21:18 If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: 21:19 Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; 21:20 And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. 21:21 And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

There are many quotes like that in the bible (I put together a short list here). I do not want you to kill children, Mrs. Räsänen, even if God says so. Seriously, don’t.
But I want to point out that there is a lot of stuff in the bible (especially if you start quoting the Old Testament, like you did), and my position is: either you take it all literal, or nothing. You can’t pick the parts you like, abuse them for your political propaganda, and ignore the rest.

To provide some background: in Finland, 80% of the population are members of the Protestant Church, and homosexuals encounter serious discrimination, which you would not expect in such a modern country. Last summer, for example, participants of the pride march in Helsinki were attacked with smoke bombs and pepper spray. Although Finland is historically greatly influenced by Sweden, regarding religion they seem to be decades behind. Sweden is considered the most secular country in Europe (probably the world):

At the end of 2009, 71.3% of Swedes belonged to the Church of Sweden (Lutheran); this number has been decreasing by about 1% a year for the last two decades. [...] The reason for the large number of inactive members is partly that until 1996, children automatically became members at birth if at least one of the parents was a member. Since 1996, only children that are christened become members. [...]
Despite a high formal membership rate in the Church of Sweden, several studies have found Sweden to be one of the least religious countries in the world, with one of the highest levels of atheism. According to different studies, between 46% and 85% of Swedes do not believe in God.

On the one hand I like the idea of people reacting to the above mentioned statements by leaving Church. On the other hand, I am concerned that the positions will radicalize even more, since the liberal members are usually the ones leaving.

The archbishop Kari Mäkinen announced that Päivi Räsänen’s statements do not represent the official opinion of the Church on the matter of homosexuality. Unfortunately, he forgot to mention what the official opinion actually is.

Ich hatte schon einmal über Konkordatslehrstühle an bayerischen Hochschulen geschrieben, und bin gerade zufällig auf heise.de über einen sehr informationsreichen Artikel dazu gestolpert: ein Interview mit Konrad Lotter, Philosoph und Redakteur des “Widerspruch. Münchner Zeitschrift für Philosophie”.

Auf jeden Fall komplett lesen, ich zitiere hier einmal einige spannende Stellen:

– Heise.de: Was sind Konkordatslehrstühle überhaupt?
– Konrad Lotter: “Konkordatslehrstühle” sind Lehrstühle außerhalb der theologischen Fakultät, deren Besetzung aber von der katholischen Kirche abhängig ist. Solche Lehrstühle gibt es auch in anderen Bundesländern, z. B. an den Universitäten in Düsseldorf, Mainz, Bonn, Köln oder Münster, vor allem aber in Bayern. Ihre rechtliche Grundlage ist das Konkordat, das Bayern mit dem Vatikan im Jahre 1924 geschlossen hat und das seitdem mehrmals geändert wurde.

– Heise.de: Wie ist das quantitative Verhältnis von Konkordatslehrstühlen und normalen Lehrstühlen?

– Konrad Lotter: Durch die verstärkte naturwissenschaftliche Ausrichtung der Universitäten und die Kürzung der finanziellen Mittel für die Geisteswissenschaften hat sich das Verhältnis mittlerweile weiter zugunsten der katholisch ausgerichteten Lehrstühle verschoben, die von diesen Kürzungen nicht betroffen waren.

Einige Stellen finde ich recht polemisch, v.a. gegen Ende des Artikels.
Die Fakten sind aber dennoch … erschreckend.

The Pew Research Center has published yet another survey, this time about US citizens’ knowledge on religions. In February 2009, I quoted the Center before regarding a study about evolution, creationism and intelligent design.

This time, they “asked 32 mostly relatively basic multiple choice questions about various religions (including a few on religion and public life)”. The poll was conducted from May 19 through June 6, 2010, among 3.412 Americans age 18 and older.

More than four-in-ten Catholics in the United States (45%) do not know that their church teaches that the bread and wine used in Communion do not merely symbolize but actually become the body and blood of Christ. About half of Protestants (53%) cannot correctly identify Martin Luther as the person whose writings and actions inspired the Protestant Reformation, which made their religion a separate branch of Christianity. Roughly four-in-ten Jews (43%) do not recognize that Maimonides, one of the most venerated rabbis in history, was Jewish. [...] In addition, fewer than half of Americans (47%) know that the Dalai Lama is Buddhist.

[A]mong the questions most often answered incorrectly is whether public school teachers are permitted to read from the Bible as an example of literature. Fully two-thirds of people surveyed (67%) also say “no” to this question, even though the Supreme Court has clearly stated that the Bible may be taught for its “literary and historic” qualities, as long as it is part of a secular curriculum. [J]ust 36% of the public knows that comparative religion classes may be taught in public schools.

There were also some knowledge questions.

However, I guess the number wouldn’t be that different if you asked Germans about the vice-chancellor …

The Catholic Group Durchblick sent out 150.000 plastic embroys (~ 10 weeks old) to German citizens via mail, in order to protest abortion. Or as a member of the organisation says, as “educational measure”; another 150.000 will be posted in the next days.

A speaker of Bistum Trier (Catholic Church) announced that they find the campaign “provocative”, but “don’t see any reason to disapprove of it”.

Imagine you were forced to abort your unborn child due to medical reasons. Or imagine you had a stillbirth. Or imagine you decided to abort your child for any other reason, really.

How very jolly to open your mail and find a plastic embroy. I think it’s a great and completely adequate form of “education” – very well done.

I wonder how people would react if I would send out 300.000 plastic figurines of priests abusing children sexually as “educational measure”. How very constructive, helpful and reasonable.

Pope “Condoms-make-AIDS-worse” Ratzinger is in the news again, this time with a couple of sentences he said in his opening address to the Queen at Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.

“Even in our own lifetimes we can recall how Britain and her leaders stood against a Nazi tyranny that wished to eradicate God from society and denied our common humanity to many, especially the Jews, who were thought unfit to live. As we reflect on the sobering lessons of atheist extremism of the 20th century, let us never forget how the exclusion of God, religion and virtue from public life leads ultimately to a truncated vision of man and of society and thus a reductive vision of a person and his destiny.”

Right.

And that from the leader of the Catholic Church, who’s words are truth by default, and to whom hundreds of millions of people look up to?

The British Humanist Association issued a statement in response:

“The notion that it is non-religious people in the UK today who want to force their views on others, coming from a man whose organisation exerts itself internationally to impose its narrow and exclusive form of morality and undermine the human rights of women, children, gay people and many others, is surreal.”

I’d like to recommend a conference to you. It will take place on the 6th of November, and is called “The Church was right: First Annual Conference on Geocentrism”.

Scientific evidence available to us within the last 100 years that was not available during Galileo’s confrontation shows that the Church’s position on the immobility of the Earth is not only scientifically supportable, but it is the most stable model of the universe and the one which best answers all the evidence we see in the cosmos.

I am not making this up.

There will be very interesting presentations, for example:

Ich bin mir wirklich nicht ganz sicher, wie man mit einem solchen Kommentar umgehen soll, wie ihn der katholische Bischof Andreas Laun publiziert hat. Er schreibt in dem Text über die Love-Parade, die Massenpanik und die vielen Toten und Verletzten.

Auf der einen Seite sollte man derart unsinnige Hetzschriften nicht verbreiten. Auf der anderen Seite ist das vielleicht einfach ein bisschen wie mit “Mein Kampf”: alle Menschen, die Hitler toll finden und einen IQ nicht niedriger als eine Standardabweichung aufweisen sollten möglicherweise einfach mit dem Buch konfrontiert werden. Da es dermaßen schlecht, widersprüchlich und unsinnig geschrieben ist, kann ich mir allzu gut vorstellen, dass es eine gewisse Abschreckungswirkung entfalten könnte.

Ich hoffe einfach, dass es mit dem Text hier ebenso ist, und niemand auf die Idee verfällt, sich plötzlich “Bischof Laun” Fan-Tshirts zu kaufen.

Kein Mensch kann ohne Erschütterung von dem Unglück in Duisburg hören und ohne Mitleid bleiben für die Toten und vor allem auch deren Eltern und andere Angehörigen! Darum haben auch der Papst, viele Bischöfe und andere Menschen für die Betroffenen gebetet!

Es ist in der Tat eine schlimme Sache, die in Duisburg passiert ist. Ich leide zwar selten mit Toten mit, aber darum soll es hier nicht gehen.

Auch steht es keinem Menschen zu, über die Toten zu urteilen und darüber hinaus zu behaupten, ihr Tod sei eine – natürlich gerechte – “Strafe Gottes” für die Sündigkeit der Love-Parade, in deren Verlauf das Unglück geschah!

Das merken wir uns, und lesen weiter.

Sie [Love-Parade] dürfen nicht schöngeredet werden als “harmloses Feiern” netter junger Menschen!

Denn da gibt es bestimmt Menschen die vorehelichen Sex haben und andere scheußliche Dinge tun! Schließlich hat Jesus “Du sollst nicht laut-Musik-hören” nicht zum Spaß gesagt!

So falsch die konkrete, moralische Verurteilung der Toten ist und bleibt, wäre es doch auch höchste Zeit zu fragen, warum viele Menschen heute auf den Begriff “Strafe” wie von der Tarantel gebissen reagieren!

Tote Menschen konkret moralisch zu verurteilen ist also falsch, sagt Bischof Laun. Allerdings schreibt er weiter:

“Love – Parade” und Teilnahme an ihnen sind, abgesehen von ihrem abstoßenden Erscheinungsbild, objektiv eine Art Aufstand gegen die Schöpfung und gegen die Ordnung Gottes, sind Sünde und Einladung zur Sünde!

Abgesehen von der lächerlichen Formulierung “objektiv eine Art Aufstand” liest sich der Satz für mich wie eine durchaus recht “konkrete, moralische Verurteilung”, die doch nach Laun “keinem Menschen zusteht”, und “falsch” ist. Hat er schon vergessen was er drei Sätze darüber schrieb? Woher kennt Laun denn objektive moralische Standards? Gibt es bei der Ausbildung zum katholischen Geistlichen ein Seminar “Moral: eine rein objektive Angelegenheit”?

Man weigert sich anzuerkennen, dass die Loveparade, abgesehen von ihrem krankhaften Erscheinungsbild, auch mit Sünde zu tun haben könnte und darum, folgerichtig, auch mit dem richtenden und strafenden Gott!

Da Tote konkret moralisch zu beurteilen aber falsch ist (s.o.), allerdings davon ausgegangen werden kann, dass Gott die Toten ja gestraft hat für ihre Sünden, urteilt Bischof Laun also nur über die Lebenden?
Ich komme nicht mehr mit.

Zugleich korrigiert die Bibel auch das verbreitete Missverständnis, als ob Strafe dasselbe wäre wie die Befriedigung eines hässlichen, grausamen Gelüstes auf Rache! Und dies trifft auf Gott natürlich nicht zu!

Natürlich nicht! Da gibt es auch ganz wenige Bibelstellen, die diesen Gott darstellen, und die tun wir geschwind als “korrigiert” ab.

Wahr ist vielmehr: Wenn Gott “straft” tut er dies mit der Absicht, den Menschen zurückzuholen, Gott straft aus Liebe!

Gott hat auf der Love-Parade also 19 (EDIT: mittlerweile 21) Menschen aus Liebe getötet?

Ich bin begeistert.

Und der Argumentation Launs folgend waren das wohl nicht einfach irgendwelche Menschen, sondern moralischer Abschaum! Die Schlimmsten der Schlimmsten eben, die Gott auf solch einer Veranstaltung aus Liebe tötet. Ich gehe mal davon aus, dass das demnach homosexuelle Menschen waren, Frauen, die der Meinung gewesen sind, über ihren eigenen Körper bestimmen zu dürfen (Faun ist erklärter Abtreibungsgegner), und weiteres Schurkenpack, das es faustdick hinter den Ohren hat.

Also, gehabt hat.

Gut, auf solche Texte sollte man gar nicht versuchen sich argumentativ einzulassen, aber der Artikel war dermaßen absurd, dass ich nicht umhin konnte, Teile hier zu kommentieren.
