Minister of Interior Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU) said a few hours ago in an interview that the law to censor the internet in Germany – with the official reason of fighting child pornography – was passed in order to set the CDU apart from other parties in the final part of the election campaign, and that it contains mistakes and errors.
As long as politicians lie, as long as they at least pretend to do things that are good for the people, they fear us, at least a tiny little bit. But as soon as they actually tell you that they don’t care at all, that they just did what they did because they wanted to be re-elected, as soon as a Dick Cheney actually admits that the US went to Iraq for oil it’s a sign that things not only not go very well, but that things are quite out of control.
Unbelievable.

I really don’t understand how for three terms the German governments have not cared enough about domestic politics to have a coherent and constitutional approach to these matters.
Both Schily and Schäuble seem to be free of any leash, marching on terrain that needs a constructive public debate more than fallen angels fighting for a totalitarian future.

Business as usual.
When Germany was about to draft a bill which was to empower the state to kill innocent people in case of airplane hijackings, the green party *supported* this law. But why did they do this?
“Otto Schily, the “Innenminister”, feared he’d be blamed by the conservatives if terrorist attacks were to occur. So he wanted to do *something* in order to show his dedication to combating international terrorism – and since we (the green party) didn’t care much about homeland security policies at that time, we helped him to make this bill pass”.
This bill was declared unconstitutional shortly afterwards…

Indeed great news Thomas, I’ve followed the reports in the last few days … but I won’t update the post until I see it written down black & white in the coalition agreement :)
