german election 2009: results and statistics

germany, politics Add comments

Introduction:

  • This post will be updated regularly in the weeks to come
  • Explanation of the parties: CDU/CSU are the two conservative, christian parties; SPD = social democrats, FDP = liberals, LINKE = left-winged party, GRÜNE = green party

Overall:

  • 1) CDU/CSU: 33.8 (-1.4)
  • 2) SPD: 23.0 (-11.2)
  • 3) FDP: 14.6 (+4.8)
  • 4) LINKE: 11.9 (+3.2)
  • 5) GRÜNE: 10.7 (+2.6)
  • OTHERS: 6.0 (+2.1)
  • PIRATES, included in “Others”: 2.1 (+2.1)

Interesting facts:

  • Only 70% of the German people went to vote (-7%)
  • CDU/CSU+FDP: 332 / 622 seats (53.38%), a clear majority; it is obvious that our new government did not just win due to the difficult direct mandate system which was declared anti-constitutional a few months back
  • FDP, LINKE and GRÜNE achieved the best results in the history of their parties, no need to talk about the SPD on the other hand
  • In this election, the German Bundestag was voted. Oversimplified: they propose bills. The bills then go to the Bundesrat (the second chamber), which is the representation of the 18 German counties; in this chamber, SPD-LINKE-GRÜNE currently have the majority – they might just block laws from our new government

Voter migration:

  • (keep it mind that 450.000 is around 1%)
  • SPD –> CDU/CSU: 620.000 voters
  • SPD –> FDP: 430.000
  • SPD –> LINKE: 780.000
  • SPD –> GRÜNE: 710.000
  • SPD –> non-voters: 1640.000
  • CDU/CSU –> FDP: 1.110.000
  • CDU/CSU –> non-voters: 920.000

Prominent politicians in their regions:

  • Steinmeier (SPD) won his region with 32.8%
  • Schmidt (SPD) lost (30%, -9%)
  • Guttenberg (CSU) 68.1% (!)
  • Cem Özdemir (GRÜNE) – a very prominent member of the green party – was not able to win his region, and is therefor not going to go to parliament (29.9%)
  • Wieczorek-Zeul (SPD) lost her direct mandate with 32.6%
  • Zensursula (CDU – she’s the bad one!) lost her region, unfortunately she’ll get into parliament because she has a top spot on the list regarding the second votes
  • Westerwelle (FDP) only received 19.1% of the votes
  • Steinbrück (SPD) lost his region with 33.8%
  • Gysi (LINKE) won a direct mandate (44.7%), Berlin Treptow-Köpenick
  • Schäuble (CDU – as bad as Zensursula really) won with 47.2% (I just can’t believe this…)
  • Ströbele (GRÜNE) defended his direct mandate with 46.8% in Berlin Friedrichshein-Kreuzberg-Prenzlauer Berg Ost
  • Merkel (CDU): 49.3% (+8%)
  • Gabriel (SPD): 44.9%, people seem to have liked his anti-nuclear-power campaign
  • Jung (CDU): he actually won his region with 36.3% (it was very close, though)

Pirate Party:

  • The Pirate Party achieved 2.1% of the votes – this is an amazing result, with nearly 1.000.000 voters (keep in mind that the green party received only 1.5% in their first election 1980)
  • The Pirate Party received 13% of the male first-time voters, and 9% of the 18-24 year olds
  • Pirates in Berlin: 3.4%
  • Karlsruhe, Aachen, Augsburg, Rostock, Braunschweig and Halle: >3.0%

Berlin Neukölln:

  • Stefanie Vogelsang (CDU) won with 30.8%, Fritz Felgentreu (SPD) scored second with 27.3% and is not going to go to parliament
  • In an Email to me Felgentreu predicted it would be rather close – he was right.
  • Both politicians received around 5% more than their parties in Neukölln got (via the second vote), showing that people actually voted tactically; I’d assume middle-left voters (GRÜNE, LINKE, PIRATES) gave their first vote to the SPD politican, and conservative (FDP) voters gave it to Stefanie Vogelsang
  • Pirates in Neukölln: 3.3%

Thanks for all the interesting numbers. I am also astonished by Guttenberg’s result which is clear evidence how media love and journalists’ inability to research joined with symbolic politics can form an admirable result. Concerning Munich it is notable that the CSU won clearly over the SPD (http://www.muenchen.de/Rathaus/politik/bundestagswahl2009/bu_wahl/348673/index.html). In local politics it’s the other way round: Munich has a very solid SPD mayor. SPD voters do not trust the SPD anymore. They need to renew the party completely.

Pirates 2,4% in Munich. Congratulations for the good result. Greens achieved 17,5% here!

I have conducted my own analysis at my blog. I’d be happy to hear your voter analysis (why people voted for one party or another) here or there =)

Guttenberg had 8% more than 4 years ago – and to be honest I completely support his decision regarding helping big companies who screwed up (and totally oppose Steinmeier and the reaction of the SPD there). But that’s about it.

Very interesting to see that CSU > SPD in Munich. We haven’t had this in a long time. Last time I voted in Munich Greens had over 40% in Haidhausen, by the way :) …
