patriot act 2008: a résumé

sad world Add comments

Huffingtonpost writes about the US patriot act:

In the debate over the PATRIOT Act, the Bush White House insisted it needed the authority to search people’s homes without their permission or knowledge so that terrorists wouldn’t be tipped off that they’re under investigation.

Let’s see what they actually did with it:

Only three of the 763 “sneak-and-peek” requests in fiscal year 2008 involved terrorism cases, according to a July 2009 report from the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. Sixty-five percent were drug cases.

In conclusion, in the year 2008 the patriot act – which is still valid – was used in 0.39% of the cases for the reason it was officially implemented for.

ACK! ACK ACK ACK! This makes me SO ANGRY. This is like the time when I was standing in the kitchen in my underwear in the middle of the night with the fridge door open and the front doorknob started to jiggle and suddenly there was the sound of a key in the lock, which was weird because everybody who lives here was either in bed or looking for snacks in the kitchen, and suddenly the door OPENED and there stood my landlady’s husband, in a bathrobe, looking guilty. He had come upstairs and let himself into our apartment at two in the morning because they pay for water for the building and he heard our toilet running. He saw me and bolted for the bathroom, hunched over as if somehow creeping on tiptoes and scrunching down as small as possible made him invisible. A running toilet SUCKS but Bogdan, my friend, this is ILLEGAL and I am in my UNDIES. Are BUSH and BOGDAN now the exemplars of effective law enforcement, tiptoeing down a dark hall to keep the populace out of trouble?!

    *RRRRR*

    sorry, couldn’t resist :)

On a more serious note, aren’t you guys allowed to shoot trespassers on your “territory” on sight? Then again, you’re not living in Texas …
