books free of charge …

all posts, ego, english, mad world Add comments

A few days back I ordered an English secondhand book from an American Seller via amazon, and received a wrong book via mail today.

I instantly wrote them an email, and just got the reply:

We’re so sorry for the mix-up. Apparently there were some crossed wires between Amazon’s database and our own that resulted in an incorrect book being shipped to you. We’ll be glad to sort this out!
[...]
We’ve searched to see if we have a copy of the book that you actually ordered in stock and unfortunately, we do not. We’ll make sure the database error is corrected and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.

A full refund has been issued for the purchase. Please don’t worry about sending the incorrect book back.

Once again, we’re so sorry for the error and we apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. We’ll make sure we don’t list this particular ISBN on Amazon’s site again; we certainly don’t want anyone else to be disappointed.

Ummm … if anyone else feels like sending me books free of charge, I won’t mind :)

What book did you want, and what did you receive?

Well, the story goes like this: the roleplaying game “vampire the masquerade” has 13 clans, and to every clan there is a clan novel. Most of them are written very well, and I love to read them. You should read them chronologically, though, and I have 12 books so far, missing out on the 10th (having read 1-9 so far).

    Clan Novel – Malkavian.

Unfortunately, they weren’t published in big numbers, and they aren’t sold anymore, so the only way you can get them is via secondhand or even antique shops. Especially the Malkavian one is quite rare, which means there are ebay and amazon offers for 50 and more euros (for a used book with 200 pages). I’ve tried to buy this book 3 times now … grrr …

The book I received this time was “Silicon Karma”, and, well, out of all books in this world, randomly, I think I was lucky:
“Reality will soon be what you make it. Even now, some theorists predict that people will be copied into computerized virtual realities where their software selves can live forever, fulfilling all their dreams – for a price.”

    Ahh, Vampire! :-)

I hope that this awful situation of not getting a book if you want it will be over once digital publishing / print on demand is more common!
